Despite the NCP-UDP-led MPA scrapping through the controversial vote of confidence by 28-27 , the opposition Congress today staked claim to form an alternative government. Soon after their defeat in the no-confidence motion against the year-old MPA government, the 31 legislators, including the four MLAs who had defected from the ruling bench drove to the Raj Bhavan and asked the Governor to dismiss the minority government. Speaker B M Lanong cast his vote when there was a 27:27 tie in the 60-member House during division. The tie-breaker came after the Speaker declared invalid the votes cast by four of the five members he suspended hours before the trial of strength. The action brought down the Congress tally, which had gone up to 31, to 27. “We have submitted our submission before the governor and to dismiss the minority government, which has only 27 members excluding the Speaker,” senior Congress legislator Dr Mukul M Sangma said. Criticizing the Speaker’s role in the conduct of the proceedings of the Assembly, he said his party would resort to constitutional and legal means to get redress.
