‘Horticultural haven’ destroyed by forest fire

Even after the government enforced ban on burning of forest, another case of forest fire was reported in the highway road from Yajang to Lirmen village effecting the lives and various plantation including orange, bamboo, banana and betel-nut. Approximately 15 families have lost orange plantation crops that they had planted since the year 2000. Around 1000 orange trees were burned along with bamboo and banana plantation at Yajang village known as 'citrus bowl of Nagaland or the ‘Horticultural haven’. The fire broke out during the wee hours at night on March 14 which continued till March 16. According to sources fire started from Akotisa of Lirmen village to Akomen of the same village. It was with the help of model village and Yajang-B villagers of Yajang that fire was brought under control which could have caused a big disaster. The cause of the fire was not known to the farmers; they only regretted that their plantations which took time and energy were all destroyed in a few seconds. Farmers said no relief was extended by the government so far.
