Manipur observes Int''l Women’s Day

Even though Manipur observed the “International Women Day” like in other parts of the globe Sunday, a section of the women still remain sit together with the Iron Lady of Manipur, Irom Sharmila with no food for the day. Womenfolk of Manipur under the aegis of the Sharmila Kanba Lup, an apex body several smaller women bodies in the state formed to save Sharmila, the lady fasting for the last nine year demanding repeal has been carrying out a relay-hunger strike at Porompat PDA complex since December 10 (International Human Rights Day). The stir has entered 89th day today and around 50 womenfolk are carrying out the stir today. Sharmila, after released from jail yesterday continue her fasting stir at the same place where the relay-hunger strike has been carrying out by the womenfolk. Today, she with other protestors without any disturbances continues the stir. Police is yet to pick him up even though they have planned to arrest her again as she is continuing the same act of attempt to commit suicide which is an offence under the law of the land. On the other hand while observing the “International Women’s Day” like in other parts of globe, the role that had and has been taking part by the women in Manipuri society were discussed. The day was observed various civil organizations mostly by the women based bodies in various part of the state today. Talkers in ne of the main function held at GM Hall, Imphal organized by the All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association. They recalled the historic events occurred in Manipur in which women took main role. They also lamented the present status of women in the state where, according to them down throttle in every fields despite their active participation.
