Ministerial team visits Ukhrul

A day after a major inferno razed the commercial hub of Ukhrul, a team of ministers on Tuesday rushed to Ukhrul Headquarters along with relief materials. According to sources, the team included ministers K. Ranjit (works), A. Jayenta (education), D.D. Thaisu (Tribal Development), MLAs H. Hemochandra and Prithviraj, Dr. Sohail Akhtar, IAS (Commissioner, Relief & Rehab), secretary MPCC Victor Keishing, former minister A.Aza and AS. Arthur and president ATSUM Thomas Kaisa. According to official reports furnished by the ‘Relief Committee on March 9 Inferno’, a total of 55 shops, 53 residential buildings, 5 govt teachers’ quarters, a mini cinema hall, office of the Tangkhul Shanao Long (Tangkhul Women Leaque) were gutted by the inferno. Major communication installations like the Airtel tower, BSNL cables, and electric wires were among destroyed. The loss of properties are still being estimated. The team has entrusted the district administration to take complete assessment of the damage and report to the government at the earliest, sources said. A total number of 70 people are taking shelter at nearby Shri Shri Durga Mandir and relief materials have been poured in from NGOs and well-wishers of the town. A meeting was conducted on Monday evening at TNL ground which was attended by thousands of citizens, sources said. One of the prominent demands include among others, upgradation of Ukhrul Fire station and setting up of a Natural Disaster Mitigation Committee to take stock of uneventualities in the near future. During the meeting, the citizens lauded the effort made by the newly appointed DC of Ukhrul Ashok Kumar, IAS and DIG B Range, Brig. S. Mander in containing the inferno. According to sources, the relief materials included 220 quintals of rice, 250 blankets, 300 litres of K.Oil, 100 litres of mustard oil, 25 bags of salt.
