All Nagaland School Teachers’ Association (ANSTA) Dimapur unit has appealed to the state education department to urgently address the ‘non-payment’ of salaries to several genuine teachers, which have been withheld for two months on grounds of ‘verification of authentic employees.’ ANSTA Dimapur unit president, P. Vashum pointed out that the employees have waited for the last two months (February and March) without any pay resulting in the suffering of many families. The ANSTA said it had stood in favour of the department’s step to clean up the fake appointments for the last two months but that it was now difficult to wait any longer. “Why can’t the government rectify the bogus appointments without having to affect the genuine teachers?” ANSTA questioned and said the teachers would have to seek alternate sources of income or available options to prevent further problems to the affected families of genuine teachers. The ANSTA also said the government’s policy of ‘no work, no pay’ was a well programmed strategy and that in keeping with the principle, the affected teachers would be forced to follow the procedure of ‘no pay, no work’ course of action. It reminded that the state government had ordered to withhold the salaries after the state cabinet’s decision on March 2 to thoroughly verify the appointments of teachers before release of salaries. The ANSTA also pointed out the exercise has continued for two long months even as the education department had directed that the exercise be taken up ‘most immediately.’ It expressed hope that the genuine teachers would not be made to suffer anymore.
