Gang-rape case; one more held

Another accused in the March 25 gang-rape at Darogapathar, Dimapur was arrested Wednesday at the Assam-Nagaland border, police said. The accused identified as Kughato, admitted that he was also involved in the crime. Two of the five-member gang are now in police custody. Earlier one Panato was arrested on the following day. Asked about two accused persons being held by the NSCN (I-M), police a request has been made to the Police Headquarter to appeal Cease Fire Monitoring Group chairperson to ask the NSCN (I-M)to hand over the two accused- Hetoi a.k.a “Hetobu” and Imtikumzuk, to police. The two were caught by the NSCN(I-M) at Merapani foothills on April 6. With this, a total of four have been arrested while one, Sabo Sangtam is still absconding. Police has also clarified that Panato was apprehended by police and not by colony residents, as reported. The five rapist-gang had raped a 25-year old girl and daughter of an engineer at Darogapathar on the night of March 25.One of the accused had also fired two rounds at the mother of the victim but she miraculously escaped unharmed. The pistol was also seized by police. Meanwhile, Sungratsu Union Dimapur (SUD) has expressed gratitude to various individuals and organisation for extending support and voicing out against the “dastardly act” committed by miscreants. SUD president, Satem Jamir and general secretary, Temjen Longchar in a joint statement has also acknowledged the “prompt” action of NSCN (I-M) in apprehending the two gang-rape accused. It has also expressed “full faith” on all responsible authority in apprehending the other absconding accused. Further, the union demanded the authority to award not less than capital punishment on such “inhuman creatures”, so that it would serve as “stark example” to those criminals having similar intent.
