Phek DCC: Reacting strongly to the statement made by state chief minister Neiphiu Rio during the NPF campaign at Pughoboto, the Phek DCC has demanded public apology from Rio.
The Chief Minister on Thursday while defending C.M. Chang’s morality had said “marrying and living with more than one wife is accepted in the Naga society.” Phek DCC stated that Rio’s statement was a ‘dangerous statement’ which directly insulted and challenged both the Naga traditions as well as the Christian marriage institution.
Stating that Rio’s ‘irresponsible statements’ was a case of obvious defiance of authority of the Church and a “daring voice coming straight from the very mouth of the head of government himself,” DCC Phek said “Neiphiu Rio’s name should be ex-communicated from the Church as an exemplary measure to stop such ideas or utterances.”
A press release issued by DCC Phek President Mikha Kenye said that at a time when Naga society was confronted with social ills of rape, kidnapping, robbery, extortion, killing and factional rivalry of the highest order, Rio, instead of delivering public welfare, security and political solution was literally legalizing polygamy, tantamount to promiscuity and unbiblical standards. “The truth is that not only the DAN Lok Sabha candidate is a declared polygamist whose morality is openly defended by Mr. Rio, but more of the same feather in the rank and files of his ministry may have prompted him to dare the Christian ethics and principles,” he said.
Phek DCC has reminded Rio that he was fighting the INC in Nagaland which was the oldest national party as there was nothing called ‘Nagaland Congress’ on record. The release also stated that his careful hesitation to directly attack Indian National Congress at best reflected ‘his desperate wishes of joining Congress while fighting the same in the state which he should stop dreaming of.’
DCC Phek has appealed to the people of Nagaland to think carefully and vote the right political party to power.
JD (U): In another press release issued by JD (U) national general secretary, S. Richard Humtsoe in regard to the confusion created by Rio’s remark “marrying and living with more than one wife is acceptable in Naga society”, said the chief minister did not mean that everyone had the right to have more than one wife.
Referring back to the Naga society, Richard said “it was difficult to analyze about love and marriage affair in the Naga society as there are too many stories of men where they slept, ate, drank…” stating it to be a “man’s personal story”.
He also said “you can neither judge others nor yourself” and added that the DAN consensus candidate C.M Chang was an able and competent administrator, able to project crucial Naga issues in the parliament with equal efficiency and skill.
