In the wake of the statement of the state chief minister, Neiphiu Rio who had purportedly said that polygamy was accepted in Naga society, during an election campaign in Pughoboto, the NPF central office has clarified that the chief minister was misquoted in certain sections of the press. NPF associate press secretary, Shilumar Ao on Monday asserted, “The Chief Minister had stated to some press persons that it cannot be denied that the practise is still followed within certain sections of our society while observing that the practise was not being supported or promoted since it is against the preaching of Christianity.” The NPF also clarified on the statement of CM who had said during the same campaign that it was fighting the Congress in Nagaland and not a national party. According to the clarification, Rio had said that the NPF has due respect for the Congress as a national party, who, however added that the NPF was against the suppressive and irresponsible nature of the Congress leaders. Rio said the Congress leaders were responsible for the “undemocratic” manner in which President’s Rule was imposed upon the Naga people. The NPF said it was due to the undemocratic imposition of President’s Rule that the party had directed its MP to vote against the UPA in the confidence vote. The NPF claimed it had observed the highest ethics of respect for all sections including the opposition Congress throughout the election campaign and has not carried out any form of personalised attacks or showed any signs of character assassination. “However the exact opposite is true of the Congress,” the NPF said and accused the opposition of resorting to the lowest levels of personalised attacks aimed at character assassination by raking up personal matters that were debarred by the model code of conduct. The NPF said the Congress was resorting to such levels as the party was “issueless and without any semblance of vision and political clarity.” “This is a new low that Nagaland is witnessing and it goes to show what sort of leaders is representing the Congress in Nagaland,” the NPF lashed out. The NPF also denied giving any assurance to upgrade the Akuluto SDO HQ to that of ADC. The NPF said it was well aware of the laid down rules and the model code of conduct and that it has the highest respect for the laid down rules meant to strengthen democracy in the interest of the people. It instead accused the Congress of violating all rules and carrying out hollow campaign strategy filled with lies and misleading statements. The NPF also slammed NPCC media cell chairman, R. Paphino for issuing “false and misleading press statement.” It said Paphino was living in a “fool’s paradise under a state of mental imbalance since he succeeds in not only contradicting his party but he has taken up the habit of contradicting himself in every statement he issues.” The NPF said Paphino was today speaking the opposite of what he used to highly praise the DAN government and its leadership, after being denied NPF ticket in the last assembly election.
