1 arrested in gang-rape case

One of the alleged rapist involved in the gang-rape of a 25-year old female was taken to custody by police after he was handed over by the local residents who caught him in the process of chasing after the rapist-gang. In the course of interrogation, Police identified the member of the rapist-gang as Pinato Sumi (25) of VK town area, Zunheboto. A hand gun was also recovered from the possession of the accused, police sources said. The incident took place on the midnight of Wednesday at Darogapathar near Ao Baptist Church, police said Friday. According to police, the five unidentified miscreants one of them armed with a hand gun, broke into the residence of the Engineer at Darogapathar and after tying all the family members, blindfolded then gang-raped the daughter. Police however said, only four of the miscreants entered at the residence while one of them stood guard outside. Sources also said one of the miscreants fired two rounds at the victim’s mother but she miraculously escaped without injury. The rapist-gang also stole some valuable goods such as ornaments including cash. Some of the residents of the area on receiving the news immediately chased after the rapist-gang and caught one of them near the DPS area after which he was handed over to police. Police also disclosed, that as per confessional statement of the accused now under police custody, one of the member of the rapist-gang belongs to one of the underground faction. Police also said the particulars of the remaining gang members have been established and arrests would be made. Meanwhile the rape victim was sent for medical examination and report was awaited at the time of filing this report. Reacting to the incident, the Ao Senso Union Darogapathar (ASUD) has condemned the “barbaric and inhuman act” of attempting to kill the housewife. meted out to an innocent family near Ao Baptist Church Darogapathar by some miscreants on March 25. ASUD president, Er I Meren Longkumer and secretary, M. Toshi Pongen in a joint press statement said that about five gunmen entered the house with sophisticated weapon and attempted twice to shoot dead the housewife. ASUD has urged the authority responsible to nab the remaining culprits and punish appropriately.
