Earth Hour in Dimapur, Kohima

Both young and the old alike converged at the Clock Tower Junction, Dimapur to observe the ‘Earth Hour’ - a fight against global warming on Saturday evening. ‘Earth Hour-Make a difference! Act against Climate Change,’ ‘Switch off your non-essential lights,’ etc were the catchphrases of the programme organized under the aegis of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) which set off smoothly despite the evening downpour. DMC chairperson, Khekaho Assumi said the programme was organized as part of the Council’s awareness to enthuse the people about global climate changes.Speaking on the sidelines of the programme, president Naga Council Dimapur, Savi Legiese opined that ‘one hour’ shut-down of power supply should be initiated every month so as to spread the message of ‘safe family and the world’. Various entertainment programmes by Naga Idols including Moanungsang, Illitoli Ayemi, Nikato Sumi, winner of Sargam Golden Voice 2008 performed ahead of the ‘Earth Hour’ timeline, 8:30 p.m. Commissioner of taxes, Temjen Toy, DMC councilors also attended the programme. Earlier, the programme was chaired by DMC councilor, T. Lotha. In Kohima, the Earth Hour started at 9:30 pm but the state witnessed a total blackout soon after the timing of the earth hour. Several local artists including Gugs Chishi from state Music task force, Dr. Nicky Kire, who is also the deputy chairman of NHHDC and several other local artistes, took part in the function. “This symbolic meeting will send out a message to the world leaders for adopting corrective measures towards addressing danger of global warming, “said PCCF Rongsenwati Ao while making a symbolic ceremony of switching off light at the PCCF office, Kohima today as part of the observation of Earth Hour.
