Aggrieved by the state government’s rejection of the resignation of the Advisory Council of the Mokokchung Municipal Council over the issue of 33% reservation for women in the municipal council, the All Ward Union of Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) has appealed the state government to immediately revoke/cancel the letter rejecting the same. The AWUMT in a representation signed by the chairmen of all the 16 wards said the letter should be revoked as the resolution to resign by the Advisory Council was taken in the interest of all citizens of the town with the initiative of the Land Owner Villages Forum and the AWUMT. The resignation should be considered by the state government in all fairness till the issue of 33% reservation was amicably solved. The Union also said the citizens of Mokokchung town would under no circumstances accept the exercise of reservation of Advisory Council members as the same had been done by ignoring and sidelining the public interest. It said the letter rejecting the resignation of the Council issued on March 10 was in absolute violation of the model code of conduct issued by the ECI ahead of the by-polls and parliamentary elections and described it as highly illegal, unconstitutional and unfair.
