Armed miscreants preying on vehicles to extort money pose grave threat on travelers, an experience which vehicles carrying newspapers to Kohima from Dimapur after midnight have been experiencing on several occasions. The particular stretch of the NH 39 is from 5th mile onwards. This happened to a taxi carrying newspapers belonging to Tir Yim Yim and Nagaland Page at 5th mile around 3 a.m. Tuesday. According to reports received here, the vehicle with a Press sticker was stopped by three armed miscreants on a motorbike, but the driver sensing danger sped away. The miscreants ran after the vehicle and fired some shots, which hit the rear door of the vehicle. However, the driver of the vehicle miraculously escaped. The matter was immediately reported to Diphupar police station and an FIR was lodged. Last year, the same vehicle was reportedly chased by miscreants in a Hyundai Santro and after stopping the vehicle near old over bridge (near hotel Tragopan), the miscreants looted the driver of cash and cell phone. The matter was reported to police. However till date the miscreants have not been apprehended. DPC, KPC condemn: Expressing “shock” and strongly condemning the incident, DPC in a condemnation note said the incident has once again questioned the security of the general public, who often become targets of such miscreants. DPC expressing “surprise” for attacking the Fourth Estate urged the law enforcing agencies to step up vigil in and around Dimapur and make efforts to arrest the culprits. In another condemnation note KPC expressed “astonishment” over the incident and urged the law enforcing agencies to step up round the clock vigil. KPC also demanded the arrest of the culprits.
