Defending champion Jelena Jankovic has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open because Kateryna Bondarenko retired with an illness. The third-seeded Jankovic took Wednesday’s first set 6-1 and was leading 1-0 in the second when her Ukrainian opponent called for the trainer and then pulled out after 35 minutes, citing illness. Jankovic played aggressively in the first set, firing winners from both sides of the court and often rushing the net. The 24-year-old Serb has won the Italian Open for the past two years and is looking to rebound after starting the year slowly. Serena Williams lost to Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in her opening match. The second-ranked Williams appeared to be moving with difficulty at times at Foro Italico, where the clay match ended at 1 a.m. on Wednesday. The players did not get to center court until well after 11 p.m., as a rainstorm forced play to be suspended for 3 1/2 hours earlier in the day. Williams was broken twice in the first set, came back in the second set, but quickly went down 5-0 in the third. Schnyder served out the deciding set and the match after 1 hour, 40 minutes. This was the first clay-court event of the season for Williams, the 2002 champion here. Earlier Tuesday, top-ranked Dinara Safina overcame a shaky start Tuesday to defeat Virginie Razzano of France 7-6 (1), 6-1 and reach the third round. Jankovic also advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over Argentina’s Gisela Dulko in a match suspended for about 3 1/2 hours due to the rain, and French Open champion Ana Ivanovic defeated Italy’s Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 6-4. Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Safina to win the Stuttgart title on Sunday, saw off Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 6-3, and ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1 7-5.
