Bandhs, rallies not a healthy sign : DC Dmu

DC Dimapur Maongwati Aier has said the recent incidents of rape, murder, extortion, abduction, theft and the consequent rallies being organized in Dimapur and in other parts of Nagalandwere ‘not a healthy sign’ for a developing society. Speaking to Nagaland Post today, Aier disclosed that most of the culprits involved in the crimes, especially in rapes in Dimapur have been identified and arrested by the police. About measures taken by the district administration to handle and tackle crimes in Dimapur, Mr Aier said the administration has divided Dimapur into 15 sectors headed by sector magistrates in the rank of SDO, EAC, revenue officers and sector commanders in the rank of DSPs for crime prevention in Dimapur district. The district administration has recently has taken community policing with the help of colony volunteers to assists the police in checking the crimes in their respective colonies, he said. For this, the district sector magistrates, sector commanders held meetings with various colony council members as a measure to promote cooperation with the administration. The DC also expressed satisfaction on the efforts taken by the various colonies around Dimapur to safe guard the interest of general public. Aier also said he has issued an order to the colony council members in Dimapur not to allow any individuals with criminal records reside in the colonies especially suspected armed activists. He also admitted that shortage of government officers and police personnel has created problems in handling mushrooming population of Dimapur. Asked why the culprits charged sheeted by the police in various cases have been granted bail within a day and subsequent crimes committed by the bailed culprits, Aier pointed out that he had issued letters to Additional Deputy Commissioner (J), Public Prosecutor, Superintendent of Police and district sessions judge asking them to handle cases such as rapes and murders seriously adding that public prosecutors and investigating officers trying the cases should present strong cases so that accused persons were not allowed to obtain bail. Maongwati Aier has also appealed to public to be vigilant and inform police about crimes, instead of expecting police to solve the cases on their own. On bandh and rallies organized aftermath of incidents by various communities and organizations, the DC opined that the parties should instead work to ensure justice instead of depending on the administration or the police alone. The DC also said since the administration and judiciary are separated, the former cannot interfere in the functioning of the latter, once the accused have been forwarded to the court. He also appealed to the business community not to close shut business establishments unless an order from the district administration was issued. He has also asked the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce to cooperate with the administration to prevent a few individuals and organizations from taking free hand in organizing bandhs and closures at their whims and fancies thus disturbing the peaceful atmosphere in Dimapur. He has also appealed various organizations, student’s body, Hohos and business community not to take hasty decisions in organizing rallies and bandhs in Dimapur without consulting the administration.
