Chuchuyimlang, under Mokokchung district and one of the two officially recognized tourist villages of the state, has in a drive painted houses in green colour to create environmental awareness and to show solidarity with ecologist in preserving the natural habitat.
Chuchuyimlang is perhaps the third village in the state after Benreu and Khonoma villages under Peren and Kohima districts respectively, to go green for environmental awareness. However, unlike Benreu and Khonoma villages where paint-works were done with the support from Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Chuchuyimlang has done it autonomously with the initiative of its Village Development Board (VDB).
To a query, VDB Secretary of Chuchuyimlang, Tsuknungmatong said VDB had generated the fund for the same from its revenues and donors. He said that VDB had spent more than Rs. 20, 00, 000 to procure the colours and materials which were distributed to about 766 households in the village. It is worth mentioning that with the assistance from the Government, VDB had earlier distributed CGI sheets to every household in the village and made it mandatory to utilize the paints.
It may be recalled that Chuchuyimlang VDB was adjudged one of the best in the state earlier and was awarded a cash of Rs. 1,00,000) to the village. The then VDB Secretary of the village, Latongwati also received the Governor’s award in 1998 in recognition for his meritorious work.
