Drawing attention to the non release of salaries of teachers under the school education department, the finance department has clarified that the school education department had earlier issued orders to the treasuries not to release salaries in view of probe conducted by the SIT to look into the case of bogus appointment of teachers. According to OSD(Revenue) V. Kezo, the finance department issued a subsequent order to the Treasuries to withhold payments as direct by the government. The OSD was responding to news reports appearing on May 5 in the local media on the issue and statements made by “so-called high ranking official of the school education department” who purportedly “quoted figures of excess employees and the amounts released by the finance department”. The OSD said the number of excess employees was estimated from the incumbent wise salary statement submitted by the school education department, with that of the previous year’s statement. The figures of amounts released were incorrect, said the OSD adding the information failed to highlight the core issue of the efforts by the school education department to detect bogus teachers. The OSD said the statement made at this juncture were “misleading, irresponsible and ill advised” while reiterating that the finance department was only carrying out the directives of the state government. The OSD further advised ANSTA to take up the matter with the school education department with whom the issue was under consideration.
