A six-year-old girl from Manipur belonging to a Naga tribe was reportedly raped and murdered at Mahipalpur, New Delhi Friday. According to North East Support Centre and Helpline (NESCH) report its fact finding team led by NESCH president and advocate, Lansinglui Rongmei rushed to the spot and confirmed the rape and murder of the victim. It was reported that the girl( Gaipuilu Gangmai) had gone to dry clothes on the terrace at around 1p.m.. When the girl did not return home, the mother went up to the terrace in search but did not find her. After 45 minutes the girl’s body was discovered in a water tank on roof of another building. Later, after the body was rushed to the Spinal Injury Centre, Vasant Kunj, it was confirmed that the victim had been raped and murdered. Sources from Vasant Kunj police station also confirmed that a suspect, living in the same building where the girl’s body was found, has been arrested while a Nepali boy was absconding. The mother of the victim is a nurse and father a businessman, NESCH stated. Meanwhile, NESCH has called upon Delhi government and National Capital Region to take appropriate measures to stop the discrimination meted out to North East people. Meanwhile, Naga Students’ Union, Delhi (NSUD) has condemned what was described as a “most horrific” rape of five-years-old Naga girl by unidentified person. According to a joint press statement issued by NSUD vice president, Sira Kharay and general secretary, Zuben Ovung the victim bore strangulation marks on the neck and bruises on the body. NSUD also said medical examinations have confirmed that the minor girl was raped. Vowing to fight for the family until the justice was done, NSUD also expressed disappointment over the “apathetic attitude” of the “unfortunate incident happened to the tribals of the country from the North East.” NSUD has also urged authorities to take immediate steps to nab the culprit at the earliest, and award necessary punishment so as to make the capital a safe place for the citizens.
