An Iranian-origin Canadian man has been arrested on charges of trying to ship nuclear devices including high-end gas-pressure gauges, meant for uranium enrichment to the country of his descent. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Mahmoud Yadegari, 35, was arrested on Thursday and was being held without bail. Yadegari was described as a Canadian citizen who arrived from Iran in 1998. Yadegari yesterday during a bail hearing listened to proceedings through a Farsi interpreter; he stood accused of buying devices destined to help centrifuges spin out highly enriched uranium, the material needed to make nuclear weapons. Police, who seized 10 devices - high-end gas-pressure gauges, essentially, worth about USD 1,100 apiece - say the suspect broke UN Security Council regulations by planning to export the sensitive technology to Iran. "It's the first time that I'm aware that a charge has been laid under the UN Act, Iran regulations, in the history of Canada," said RCMP Inspector Greg Johnson, as he announced the charges yesterday at the Mounties' Milton detachment. "I believe the maximum penalty is USD 1 million or 10 year's imprisonment." George Webb of the Canada Border Services Agency's counter-proliferation unit called the importance of the "a 10" on a scale of 1 to 10, the newspaper said. Yadegari allegedly tried to obtain 10 pressure transducers, which can be used in centrifuge to produce weapons-grade enriched uranium, from the US and ship them to Iran. The investigation was triggered by a tip to US agents from a Boston-area firm that sold the devices to a Canadian. The equipment allegedly was shipped to Toronto by truck with the intent of getting it to Iran through Dubai, United Arab Emirates, authorities said.
