Three days after the gruesome rape and murder of a six-year-old Naga girl (Gaipuilu Gangmei) in Mahipalpur, New Delhi, thousands of protestors, mostly women and students under the banner of Jalukie Valley Women Organisation (JVWO), Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland and Mhainamtsi Students’ Union on Tuesday took out a massive protest rally at Jalukie, Peren district, demanding the arrest and award of severe punishment to culprits involved. Carrying banners and placards some of which read : “We Condemn The Inhuman Act”; “Book The Culprit Without Delay”, “We Demand Immediate Justice For The Beastly Act On The Innocent Child”, “Fair Treatment of Northeast People”, “A Child Is Born To Be Loved And Not To Be Murdered” etc, the protestors took out a silent procession from Jalukie town to Mhainamtsi village, some three kilometers, where a funeral service was held. On arrival at the venue and before the funeral service, some of those who spoke to the media, clearly sent a strong message to the Delhi government and its police, to immediately arrest those involved and bring them to book. President, Rongmei Pui Organisation (RPO), Peren, Achingpei Gangmei termed the rape and murder the innocent minor as an insult to women. Imploring upon the law enforcing agencies to ensure the safety of women, she reiterated that women would fight till the culprits were brought to justice. Other women leaders also demanded that severest of punishment to those perpetrating atrocities on women. Another speaker said the women would continue to press for deliverance of justice. At the funeral service, Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) President, Khesheli Chishi assured that the association would address the issue and would do whatever possible to ensure justice was meted. Maintaining that it would go all out to pressurise the government on the issue, NMA President appealed to the people to unite in prayers till the demands were achieved. Zeliangrong Baudi, Zeliangrong Mipui Organisation, Jalukie Valley Women Organisation, Zelianrong Students’ Union Delhi, Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) and several others who spoke at the funeral service condemned the heinous crime and demanded capital punishment to the culprits. The organisations also expressed total solidarity and sympathy to the victim’s family. Talking to this reporter, Martin Gangmei, the father of the victim, disclosed that the Delhi Police has detained the father of the accused and obtained a statement. The victim, Gaipuilu was the daughter of Martin and Aluna Gangmei. Martin said the father of the accused, reportedly told Police that there were others also involved in the incident. Martin also said that Vasant Kunj police has so far declined to disclose the names and particulars of the other suspects involved. It may be recalled that the victim, 6-year old Gaipuilu minor , was raped and murdered, when she had gone to dry clothes at the terrace of another building and her body discovered in a water tank at the terrace in Mahipalpur, Delhi on April 17. Earlier, when the mother was searching for the missing daughter, she met a neighbour named one Ashok (one of the accused who is still absconding) whether he saw Gaipuilu, upon which he replied that he too was searching for the child and then later fled from the scene. Later, the bucket which the child took along with her was found in the next building and later the body which was discovered inside the water tank.
