Three officials of a company engaged in the East-West corridor project in Assam’s North Cachar Hills district were on Tuesday abducted by suspected militants of the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel Gorlosa). According to Sinlung report, the abduction comes just a few days after several firms threatened to pull out of the project because of the adverse law and order situation in the hill district. Deputy commissioner S. Jagannathan said the three officials were forcibly whisked away from a secluded portion of the Lumding-Haflong Road at Mupa village around 11.30am. Sources said the officials, K.P. Dutta Roy, Tarun Behera and Benikanta Kalita, were on their way to Haflong from Lumding when their Tata Sumo was waylaid by about half-a-dozen gun-toting militants at Mupa. The officials are employees of a private civil engineering concern, Inter Continental Construction and Techno Company, which is engaged in the construction of the East-West highway between Silchar and Porbandar. Police sources in Haflong said they suspected the Jewel group’s hand in the abduction, but were collecting information to ascertain the identity of the abductors. The army, paramilitary and police forces were mobilised to Mupa, 47km from the district headquarters town of Haflong, this afternoon to conduct a combing drive in the nearby jungles. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, during his recent visit to the district in the wake of ethnic violence, had asked security forces to go all out against the mili-tants to restore peace in the district. Both the East-West corridor and the broad gauge conversion projects in the district have been badly hit by militancy. A police official in the district said the companies’ work camps were scattered and it was difficult to provide adequate security to the employees everywhere. Dilip Nunisa, the chairman of the pro-talks DHD (Dilip) faction, said the Jewel faction had, in connivance with the NSCN (Khaplang), recently established its sway in the Mupa and Maibong areas.
