One of Britain’s most promising young stars has hanged herself in Paris just days before her 29th birthday. Stunning starlet Lucy Gordon — who appeared in Spiderman 3 and other big budget Hollywood films — was found dead by cops in her central Paris apartment Wednesday.
Miss Gordon — who also worked as a model — had recently finished filming a movie in which she stars as Birkin, the wife of iconic French singer Serge Gainsbourg.
In Spiderman 3 Miss Gordon played the role of roving British reporter Jennifer Duggan.
A spokesman for the Cannes film festival, currently underway on the French Riviera, described Miss Gordon as “a hugely promising young actress”.
He said: “We are devastated by this news. All those attending the festival had been hugely impressed by Lucy’s work. She was a star in the making.”
An officer who found the actress described the scene as “absolutely horrific”.
He added: “This was a clear and very tragic case of suicide. There are no suspicious circumstances.”
Her agent Jean-Louis Diamonika also confirmed that Miss Gordon had taken her own life.
The Oxford-born actress, who was passionate about France, was also being dubbed the new Jane Birkin, the British singer and film star who moved to Paris in the 60s.
She also starred in the recent film Perfume, and had a role in a new French comedy Cineman, due out later this year, and a leading part in the romantic comedy The Russian Dolls in which she co-starred with Amelie star Audrey Tautou.
She had made around 12 films in her eight-year career. France’s Cini magazine reported yesterday that Miss Gordon had always seemed “a totally calm and content” person in the two brief meetings they had had with her.
A reporter for the magazine said: “I met her briefly. She was totally normal, and did not appear to have any issues.
“You simply never know what is really going on in someone’s head. She was struggling with something that lead to this tragic waste of a promising young life.”
