The Assam government Sunday ordered a probe into the recovery of a large number of human skeletons from the outskirts of the state capital last week.As many as 14 human skeletons were recovered Friday at a construction site near a college here at Fatasil-Amabri area creating a sensation in the city. “The government has asked the district administration to enquire into the recovery of skeletons and submit a report within two days,” an official spokesman told reporters here. The local residents said that the site was used by the city municipal board for dumping unclaimed bodies in the early 1970s. However, the municipal authorities have refused to accept the claims. “The skeletons were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for tests to ascertain when the bodies were buried,” police said. The recovery of skeletons led to a spate of speculations in the local media. Some reports said the skeletons were of missing United Liberation Front of Asom militants, while another report said it could be of poor cancer patients who died in the nearby B. Barooah Cancer Hospital. The recovery has created sensation in the city, with police also at its wits end to explain it.
