Many vehicles with Nagaland registration number are being used in Manipur mostly in the hill districts without legal validity. Despite the knowledge of illegal use of these vehicles, state transport department has not yet taken up any action so far. Motor vehicles check posts have been functioning in Imphal east, Imphal west, Churachandpur, Thoubal, Senapati districts and at Kangpopkpi while that of Ukhrul is covered by Imphal east, Chandel by Thoubal and that of Tamenglong by Kangpokpi. As per the Motor Vehicle Act 1988-89 of India which is also in force in the state, if a vehicle is bought from other states, it should be registered with the motor vehicle department of the state where it is being used within a period of one year by changing the earlier registration number. If the rule is not followed, defaulters are punishment under the Act. But, for the last many years, vehicles with registration number of Nagaland have been in use in Manipur with Ukhrul and Senapati at the maximum. Tamenglong and Chandel district however has less number compared with that of Ukhrul, the source said. An officer of the state transport department observed that the department was facing shortage of manpower and neglect from the state government. He also said that check posts were not upgraded timely resulting in lack of necessary effective action. The officer further stated that the department had the knowledge of the illegal use of vehicles with Nagaland registration number and stated the lack of motor vehicle check posts as one of the main reasons behind such illegal use in Ukhrul. The officer also disclosed that the meager fund allocated to the state transport department proved a major hindrance for work in the department.
