Post Graduate Students’ Union, Lumami (PGSU-L), Nagaland University has decided to wait for three days to facilitate the authorities to shift the departments to the new building after an appeal by the Professor Incharge of Lumami Headquarters to wait for 2-3 days. The PGSU (L) had submitted their third representation to the NU authorities on May 14 demanding that the old building where classes were being held be shifted to the new building before commencing the classes for the 2nd and 4th semester. The classes were to start from today. The students had also said that they would take their own course of action if the demand was not met by the authorities. On discovering that the shifting of the building was yet to be done, the students decided to shift their classes to the new building on their own today. However, before the students could swing into action this morning, the Professor Incharge of Lumami Headquarters, Prof. T. Lanusosang appealed them to wait for 2-3 days. The PGSU (L) after a general meeting held at the auditorium today decided to wait for three days to enable the NU authorities to shift the departments. Talking to this Correspondent today at Lumami headquarters, officials of the PGSU alleged that the NU authorities and National Building and Construction Corporation (NBCC) have made an agreement that the new building would be completed by March 2008. They said that the Professor Incharge of Lumami headquarters have suggested to the NBCC that the handing and taking over of the new building should be completed between May 1 to 3. But all these, according to PGSU officials were yet to be materialized. Meanwhile, the PGSU (L) during the meeting also decided to serve an ultimatum to the Vice Chancellor, NU and has sought his consideration and immediate action in the matter. The students in the ultimatum said that the issue of shifting the old department to the newly constructed building and also shifting of the VC office to the HQ Lumami was brought to the VC’s knowledge through repeated appeals and representations. The VC’s office has however failed to respond and comply with the genuine demands of the students, it added. The students also adopted some resolutions during the meeting. It was resolved that the NU authorities and the NBCC should take steps for the shifting of the old department to the newly constructed building within three days, with effect from May 30. During these three days, the students decided to boycott normal classes as a sign of resentment. Referring to the letters and representations from the Professor Incharge as well as the PGSU to VC, the students said that the shifting of the HQ were expected to take place from May 20, 2009 and the normal functioning of the NU from its Lumami HQ to be started from June 1, 2009. But the things were not carried out accordingly, the PGSU (L) said, describing it as “failure” on the part of the NU authority. In this regard, the PGSU (L) has asked the office concerned to initiate measures for the immediate shifting of the HQ to Lumami by June 15. The PGSU (L) threatened to take its own course of action for the achievement of their genuine demands if the authority failed to comply with the ultimatum.
