Authorities here on Tuesday detained five of the 13 volunteers of student bodies on charges of being activists of the underground outfits while the rest eight arrested in connection with the professor murder case have been released on PR bond. The detention of the five student leaders evoked anguish among the students community who gathered Tuesday evening to announce various forms of agitations. Former president of the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) Hijam Dinesh, a research scholar in English and present education affairs secretary of the Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Arambam Thoithoi were among the five students who have been detained under NSA by orders issued by Imphal west district magistrate. Police charged Hijam Dinesh and Thoithoi as activists of the proscribed Kanglei Yoel Kanna Lup (KYKL), who owned to the murder of the former dean of students welfare, prof. Dr Islamuddin on May 25. Two more students from DESAM, Thoudam Shyam and Ksh Kiran were among the five detained under NSA also on charges of being activists of the outfit while a volunteer of the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) Thangjam LanKishore has been charged of being in the UNLF. It may be mentioned that police had earlier stated that the students were arrested as activists of militant outfits and not as volunteers of the student bodies. Professor, Md Islamuddin who was the former dean of student welfare was killed by four miscreants inside the MU campus, Canchipur, Imphal in board daylight on May 25. DESAM has set a deadline till Tuesday for unconditional release of the 13 student volunteers and held an emergency meeting late Tuesday evening to announce their future course of agitation.
