Manipur police Sunday expressed concern over the modus operandi of militants using widows, women living with HIV/AIDS and women from broken families by taking advantage of their plight, to carry out extortion activities. To buttress the claim, SPPO, Imphal east district police , L Birbabu at a press conference held at the district police headquarters, produced two such widows living with HIV/AIDS. The two widows identified as Maibam Thoibi Devi alias Echantombi (33) wife of late Choaba Singh of Moreh ward no. 9 and Thangjam Bala Devi alias Ngamkheingakpi wife of late Bijoy of same locality with the former were apprehended by a team of Imphal east district police commandos as activists of the KCP(MC) Lamyanba Khuman. A 9mm pistol with two live rounds of ammunition was also recovered from the possession of one of the widows, Bala Devi, during an operation at Lamlong Bazar under Porompat police station Sunday at around 10.30 a.m. The two were rounded up by police acting on a tip off that some militants were collecting money from government officers by summoning them at a shop in the Bazar. Thoibi has two children and was arrested earlier also as an active member of the KCP in October 2008. It was reported that Thoibi was having a relation with one Pamen hailing from Kwakeithel and both used to stay together in hotels in Imphal. Bala who has no children had been trained and inducted into the KCP(MC) Lamyanba Khuman cadre bearing army no. 60. She obtained training at 3rd batch (Women wing), said the SDPO to the media persons. She is also maintaining relationship with one Chaoba Singh of Imphal. This not the first time that widows, women living with HIV/AIDS and from the broken families were nabbed by the police in the state allegedly for engaging in militancy related activities. The third woman who was later confirmed to be the wife of a government employee, had been summoned by the two widows for negotiation in connection with the extortion served by the KCP(MC) Lamyangba Khuman group. She has been released by the police commandos after proper verification, the police officer added.
