The department of land resources development, Wokha had organized a launching programme of power tillers on May 7 at Serika village, Wokha for the villages of Serika, Roni, Sungkha, Lio-Wokha (New) and Hayiyan. The programme was graced by Michael Yanthan, general secretary, Kyong Hoho as chief guest and Jacob Yanthan, SDAO (Store), Dimapur, department of agriculture as guest of honour.
Keynote address was delivered by C. Vanchamo Ngullie, district project officer (DPO), land resources development, Wokha. In his address the DPO highlighted and explained the management and work efficiency of power tiller, its employment opportunities and its uses in different seasons viz., rabi and khariff crops after harvesting the primary crop i.e. paddy. The main target of the department was to minimize the man-day in the fields which could be utilized in the farms/orchards.
The chief guest appreciated the coordination of the allied departments and their zeal to uplift the rural economy particularly in the district and the state in general. So far issuing of power tiller free of cost in the village was first of its kind in the history of the district. The chief guest stressed that the farmers should realize the mistakes committed in the past and look forward to utilize the potentiality of the land. He also appealed upon the people living in the border areas to be united for the betterment of the society.
The guest of honour highlighted about the manual operation of the power tiller, its care and maintenance and its advantages over man and draught animals. He also said that the department is always ready to provide the farmers with various modern farm machineries on subsidized rate and impart trainings but asked the farmers to apprise the department of their needs.
The department of LRD, Wokha, meanwhile has warmly acknowledged the presence of general secretary, Kyong Hoho and his colleagues and also SDAO (Store), Dimapur, for making the programme a grand success.
