A shop owner was shot and injured while the two extortionists who shot him were beaten up by public on Wednesday at Padumphukuri at around 6:30 p.m. The duo however managed to escape on an unregistered bike leaving the weapon behind. The shop owner, Md. Hussain Ahmed’s wife said that she tried to close down the shop when she saw the two local youths aged around 20 coming towards their shop. She said the same persons had earlier threatened to shoot their son with a pistol for not relenting to their monetary demands. Ahmed, who was standing nearby, tried to intervene after one of the miscreants slapped his wife but was hit on the forehead with a pistol during the scuffle and later got shot on the neck. Hearing the commotion, the public gathered and beat up the duo. However, the miscreants escaped on a red Apache bike which the police later said was unregistered. A country made pistol with an empty shell of a .22 bullet was recovered from the spot. Later, the victim was rushed to Zion Hospital and was reportedly “not serious.” Immediately after the incident, police carried out a combing operation, during which the bike was recovered from Holy Redeemer, Chumukedima. Police sources disclosed that the duo was given first aid at the dispensary before they left leaving behind the bike.
