Proving the adage that education knows no li mits of age, marital status or other social constraints, a mother of this city has passed the Madhyamik examination under the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) along with her daughter this year. According to UNI report, Swapna Roy (50), a resident of Arundhutinagar of the city, is a government employee and working as a sub-staff with state election department. She completed her education upto ninth standard before her marriage and subsequently got employment in the 1990s. That put a full stop to her studies. Later, she gave birth to Sharmistha, who is now 16 years of age and has passed Madhyamik this year from Bordwali Higher Secondary School. The circumstances brought back the mother-daughter duo to the same platform because Sharmistha also had no inclination to pursue her education after class IX. ‘’Sharmistha set some conditions for further studies that unless I too appear for Madhyamik, she would not sit for the Matriculation examination, which virtually forced me to resume my studies. Sharmistha has now become my teacher and I finally appeared for the examination from Bijoy Kumar Girls’ School of the city,’’ Swapna said. Talking to UNI, Sharmistha said, ‘’I have planned to get admission in Commerce stream, but my mother has again created trouble for me by saying that she does not want to go for Higher Secondary education and I made it clear that I too will stop here if she does not change her mindset.’’ However, Swapna pointed out, ‘’I cannot convince her that I would not able to join HS classes because I cannot study full time along with my job. No school will allow me to get enrolled if I remain irregular in classes.’’
