Thousands of people, wearing traditional dresses of their respective community, Thursday paid floral tributes to the martyrs who died fighting for protection of territorial integrity of Manipur at the “The Great June Uprising” or “Integrity Day”. Eighteen people laid down their lives in a gun battle with security personnel in an explosion of public outrage on the Manipur territorial integrity issue on June 18, 2001 after the Centre extended the Indo-Naga cease fire "without territorial limit". To mark the day, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has been observing the day as the "Great June Uprising" with a public meeting at Kekrpupat where the memorial site of the 18 victims are located while the All-Manipur United Clubs Organization observed the day as “Unity Day” with another public meeting at THAU ground, Imphal. A constant stream of people queued up to offer flowers and incense at the memorial of the 18 martyrs at Kekrupat in Imphal braving a hot summer sun. Ministers, MLAs, political personalities turned up to the memorial site and participated in offering tributes at the memorial site. Mourners also came all the way from Bangladesh, Assam and Tripura to pay tributes to the martyrs. Hundreds of policemen and Central paramilitary force stayed on alert in the vicinity of the Kekrupat and THAU ground where meetings were held.
