In the wake of NGOs demanding immediate removal of Anil Pradhan as Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP), United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit today questioned whether the appointment of DGP was “politically motivated”. Taking part in the private member’s motion on the “nexus between the politicians, businessmen and criminals” in the Assembly, Mr Basaiawmoit asked the government “whether the post of DGP is an adhoc appointment where changes can be made at the drop of a hat.” The UDP legislator statement assumed significance in the backdrop of Pradhan’s appointment as DGP superseding 1976-batch IPS officer Kulbir Krishan. “Is the post of DGP a political appointment not covered by the rules of seniority, efficiency and track record,” Basaiawmoit questioned in the floor of the House.
