Responding to a report in this newspaper on the unchecked prices of various commodities in the market, the Dimapur Municipal Council chairperson Khekaho Assumi and other members conducted a series of lightning checks in markets within DMC jurisdiction at around 7 a.m. Thursday and seized some 250 kilograms of fish, mutton, live chickens , pigeons, about 40 boxes containing cartons of eggs and other edible commodities. All the seized items were taken to the DMC office. During Thursday’s checks in various markets, the DMC chairperson and colleagues also discovered lapses in the functioning of the price control department and as a consequence, one Inspector (UDA), four LDAs and one grade IV staff were immediately placed under suspension for negligence of duties. However the council members in-charge of price control, M. K Gongmei and Vihoto Yepthomi rejected the findings on the plea that the department used to check the rates of the commodities in the market almost everyday. Asked how often the members in-charge and staff members checked the rates of commodities, the member was not in a position to substantiate his claims. Asked whether any action would be taken against the ward member in charge price control, one senior DMC member stated that DMC board meeting would be convened to decide on the fate of the members in-charge. One DMC member however said that the suspended persons were not to be held solely responsible but that the council members in-charge should own moral responsibility and step down. On being asked about the seized commodities and the errant businessmen, the DMC chairperson said that heavy penalty would be imposed against the traders and that they would be asked to sign bond. Khekaho Assumi further added that henceforth those involved selling more than the fixed rate by the DMC would be seriously dealt with and trade licenses cancelled. Interacting with the local media, the DMC members admitted lapses in the price control department of the DMC. One of the members further lauded the media for bringing the issue to light to the DMC and for the public in general. While asking for the public cooperation in checking the menace, DMC chairperson Khekaho said that council member in charge of various departments in the DMC should either perform or perish. He stated that each council member was allotted with of a portfolio to look after and if any member did not perform, the DMC chairperson has to step in to intervene in that department. Public grievance cell was set up by the DMC with Yanger Toshi DMC member as the head to control the prices and check the rates. Yanger Toshi DMC member assured that rates in the market would be reviewed and action would be taken against the sellers. The DMC members have asked the district administration to check the rates of edible commodities outside the DMC jurisdiction so that uniformity within Dimapur district could be maintained.
