Vehicles with Government registration numbers and Taxis seemed to be the main culprits of traffic offences in Kohima which has been witnessing heavy traffic congestions. Kohima Traffic Police assisted by volunteers from Kohima village youth which carried out traffic regulation on Tuesday imposed fines on about 50 vehicles for traffic offences particularly for wrong parking. Almost 50 percent of the vehicles fined today were of government vehicles and included police vehicles, according to volunteer source. A fine of Rs.100 per vehicle was imposed on the spot through Government Challan for traffic violation. Tyres of those vehicles which were found parked wrongly and left by the driver were punctured by the traffic police and volunteers as a punishment without imposing fine. If such traffic offenders were to be taken into account, there could be more than 100 cases of traffic violation detected today alone, said a volunteer. Meanwhile, DC Kohima Sachopra Vero revealed that the RTA, Kohima had decided to carry out the traffic regulation exercises with the assistance of the local volunteers so as to bring sense of traffic regulation. He said that necessary directives had been issued to the traffic police to strictly enforce the Traffic Rules as per the Motor Vehicles Act. He also warned of cancellation of Taxi permit, Vehicle Registration and Driving licenses of those habitual traffic offenders if they did not pay heed after repeated warning.
