Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee today, in a letter to the state election officer, demanded for a free, fair and peaceful panchayat poll slated for July 20. The Congress also protested the departments decision to engage majority of poll workers from the ruling CPI(M)s employees’ wing violating the guidelines of the Chief Election Commission. Congress leader Sudip Burman said the Chief Election Offices guideline was to engage 50 workers from ruling partys organisations and the remaining from the Opposition party. But the state election department violated the guidelines engaging majority of them from Tripura Government Employees Coordination Committee, CPI(M)s employees’ wing. According to UNI report, the Opposition also alleged that the state government violated Electoral Code of Conduct. The Congress demanded all these of activities of the ruling party should be stopped and Election Department intervene in this regard for a free, fair and peaceful poll. Referring to the CPI(M)’s claim, that it is going to win three Panchayat and 53 seats unopposed, the Congress leader alleged that it was possible because the rival party resorted to violence intimidating the party candidates. ‘’The CPI(M) activists resorted to violence knowing well that Congress this time will do well in rural body election after CPI(M) received a severe blow in the last Parliamentary election,’’ Mr Burman said.
