Sumi Kukami Hoho president, GB Kakihe and Zunheboto Town Council Member, Nitovi Awomi, whose acts of standing as witnesses in the “wrong usage of Sumi Customary Law,” in the April 11 rape case in Zunheboto were condemned by four unions of Lizutomi village, have clarified that the settlement was initiated by the accused and the aggrieved parties and not through their initiatives. The two, in a joint statement said as responsible persons in the society, it was their bounden duty to advocate peaceful and harmonious solutions. As such, the duo said that when the two parties involved in the case requested them to stand as witnesses to the settlement, “we willingly did the same considering that it was good gesture and welcome move as per the customary law.” They also advised any Naga to interpret the customary laws judiciously and not to the wishes of the individuals. Meanwhile, Dimapur Lizutomi Kuqhakulu vice president, Kashito Awomi through a corrigendum has clarified that the name of Zunheboto Town Council member should be read as Nitovi Awomi and not as rendered.
