NPCC demands Forest Minister MC Konyak step down Accusing forest minister M. C. Konyak along with some government officials, of taking control over a huge chunks of land within the Hotahoti Reserved Forest in Naginimora, Mon district, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Wednesday demanded that he (MC Konyak)step down from office and those official involved punished. Lamenting that while policy makers and environmentalists were painstakingly working to check alarming human depredation so as to make the earth a better place, the NPCC said the DAN government in Nagaland and the forest department headed by Mr Konyak have failed to contain the rampant undesirable activities of encroachment and deforestation “in our priced Intangki Reserved forest.” The NPCC said state government was displaying feebleness even though it was empowered by all legal provisions and having thousands of security personnel at its disposal even to the extent of roping in the services of civil societies. On issue of devastation at Hotahoti Reserved Forest , NPCC media cell chairman R.Paphino and member Dr K. Hoshi, said the forest minister and some officers under the forest, rural development and industries departments have taken control of a huge chunk of land and “a brick farm house has been erected by a top public leader.” The NPCC said the “lustful behaviour” of forest authority have been exposed in a most “bizarre manner” by the devastation spree in Hotahoti Reserved Forest where an area of more than 1000 acres declared as government reserved forest land destroyed and now converted into a private field and farms for the “privileged people.” They also alleged that encroached lands, like booty, were also distributed to NPF workers “ like distributing sweets”. The NPCC also demanded that the state government constitute a High Level Inquiry Committee to investigate into this “dubious and transgressional act” of the leaders, government officers and public involved and those found guilty be booked and award punishment appropriately as per given laws.
