The Nagaland government has asked the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) to stop levying taxes on land and buildings in Kohima town. Replying to a question raised by Congress MLA, K V Pusa, Urban Minister, Shurhozelie told the Assembly that the state government had directed the KMC to stop from collecting such taxes till further notification. He however said that under Section 123 of the Nagaland Municipal Act’ 2001, the municipal and town councils have been given power to levy taxes on land and buildings with the prior sanction of the state government. The minister said KMC was found to be carrying out house and plot verification and realizing house and plot tax in Kohima town without the prior sanction of the state and therefore it has been directed to stop such exercise till such time the approval of the government was obtained. Pusa also asked government to specify the rate of house taxes by municipals and town councils particularly in Kohima.
