Attacks on non-locals in Manipur

Despite security measures of police, attacks on non-locals continue in Manipur with one more Bihari shot at and injured by two miscreants suspected to be militants on Saturday in broad daylight at around 1.30 pm in Imphal area. The attack happened amidst tight security measures taken up by state police to prevent further attacks in the aftermath of a series of attacks on non-locals. Police have even prevented non-locals from going to work in outskirts of Imphal city in the wake of the attacks. Eyewitnesses account said the non-local later identified as Uttam hailing from Bihar was attacked by two miscreants coming on a scooter. Uttam engaged in iron works at an almirah making industry was coming on a bicycle when the two miscreants shot at him from the back and the bullet hit at the cheek exited on the other side. He was immediately rushed to the RIMS hospital, Imphal where doctors said his condition was stated to be serious. In the aftermath of the attack, police commandos rushed to the spot and conducted frisking and checking at all possible exit points. However, there were no reports of rounding up any suspects. Saturday’s attack is the fifteenth instant of attack on non-locals residing in Manipur since January this year. At least 23 non-locals have died in the attacks while five including Saturday’s victim injured severely. Some of the dreaded attacks were killing of nine non-locals by unidentified militants inside the Keibul Lamjao National Park at Khordak Awang Leikai area in Bishnupur District on May 11 last and killing of three labourers inside the Central Agriculture University Campus on the night of June 11 last. The latest incident was an attack on two migrant workers in two separate incidents on July 8.
