Nagas shine in Sepaktakraw c’ship

Four players from Nagaland, two boys and two girls who were part of Indian team that won a silver and three bronze medals, in the recently concluded 24th Kings Cup, International Sepaktakraw World Championship in Bangkok, Thailand has once again brought laurels to Nagaland Sepaktakraw Association (NASTA) as well as to the State. Organized by International Sepaktakraw Federation the four players from the state namely; Viseyie Koso from Nagaland Police, Zashevoto Pusa from SAI, Netolu Medeo and Pungotolu Puro both from State Sports Hostel were selected by the NASTA during the National tournament-Federation Cup that was held in Mizoram. The silver medal was won by the men’s team in Team Event after going down to Brunei in the final. The team also won bronze in the Regu Event. Two bronze medals were won by the women’s team in the Team Event and Regu Event. It may be mentioned that this year alone, State Sepaktakraw team had won a gold medal in the 12th Sub-junior National Sepaktakraw Championship that was held at Jodpur, Rajasthan from June 21 to 24. Besides this, two boys from NASTA were among the Indian team that won bronze medal in the Malaysia Cup that was held in the month of May. Meanwhile, State sepaktakraw coach, Holshe Khrieo has lauded State chief minister, Neiphiu Rio and department of Youth Resources and Sport for their initiative in promoting sports and games in the state. Khrieo specially thanking Rio for giving importance to sepaktakraw has said that it was his (Rio) initiative the state sepaktakraw has been in good shape and was able to excel both in national and international levels. Meanwhile, India dished out a solid performance at the 24th Sepak Takraw World Championships with the country’s men’s team winning three medals including a gold and the women’s team bagging three bronze medals. Sepak Takraw, also known as kick volleyball, concluded on Friday in Bangkok’s Fashion Island, Thailand. Indian men’s team came from behind to beat Philippines to bag the gold medal in the Double Regu event with a 19-21, 21-19, 21-17 scorecard. It was a sweet revenge for India as Philippines had defeated them in the opening day league encounter. The Indian trio of skipper M Nano Singh, Viseyie Koso and Jiteshor Singh, along with substitute Niken Singh created the big upset. They lost to the United States to settle for a silver in the Team Regu event but did well to win a bronze in the Individual Regu event, outclassing Germany 21-15, 21-10. Indian women’s team comprising skipper E Rasheshwari Devi, AK Rebika, K Robita Devi played three semi-finals one after another but lost all to settle for three bronze medals. They beat two-time world champions Malaysia twice to earn the third place in all their three events. This is Indian eves’ best finish ever and their previous best was a bronze at the 2007 World championships.
