Alarmed by information about collection of illegal taxes by various agencies including police, excise, forest etc. at various check gates in highways, state DGP K. Kire Monday clarified that police checks gates and police have no authority to collect money from any individuals/drivers. Stating this, DIG(R) L Singsit said all district SPs have been directed to sternly deal with any police personnel involved in such activities. The PHQ has directed all district SPs to take immediate steps to stop illegal collection at check gates. It also directed that any check gates operating without government authority are to be closed and action initiated against those involved. Welcoming any authentic information about such illegal activities, the police have asked public to directly contact respective SPs. Meanwhile, SP Dimapur in a similar directive asserted that police personnel were not authorized to collect money anywhere in Dimapur. The SP in a release reiterated that police personnel are deployed at check gates purely for the purpose of checking illegal and contraband articles, illegal immigrants etc. Likewise traffic personnel were also deployed for traffic regulations and not to indulge in any illegal activities/collection of money. Reminding truck drivers and owners not to pay any money to police at any place in Dimapur, the SP has asked the public to immediately inform the matter to senior police officers so that disciplinary actions would be initiated.
