Inter dist ‘catch them young tourney’

The 3rd Inter District “Catch Them Young” Tournament, for under-14, organized by department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS), kick started Tuesday at the I.G. Stadium, Kohima with Director General of Police Nagaland, K. Kire, IPS gracing the opening ceremony as chief guest. All the 11 districts of the state are taking part in the three-day meet and will be competing in three sports discipline Handball, Sepaktakraw and Archery. Declaring the tournament opened K.Kire, urged the youngsters to take sports as a serious profession and challenged the young sportspersons to dedicate themselves’ and represent Nagaland in the national and international levels. Kire also revealed that when he was member of Nagaland Sports Control Board he suggested to the government for creation of post particularly Coaches in different fields so that that standard of games and sports in the state can improve where Nagas can represent in the national and international levels in the near future. In this regard, he urged the department of Youth Resources and Sports to pursue the same matter with the government. At the same time Kire appealed the parents to extend their support and cooperation to their children in taking up sporting activities. The DGP also lauded State chief minister Neiphiu Rio for his sincere contribution towards sports and games in the state. Chairing the function Youth Resources and Sports, director Beiu Angami said that the main objective of organizing the ‘Catch Them Young Tournament’ under-14 was to identify and tap the young talents and also to nurture them to be more disciplined in the field of games and sports. He also said that the department of Youth Resources and Sports has adopted 33 schools in the state, 3 each in districts for imparting training and coaching in the sports discipline of Handball, Sepak takraw and Archery. The director further informed that the department was also planning to select the best ones and to nurture and bring them to Sports Academy in Dimapur and Kohima. The closing function will be held on June 25 at 3 pm with Additional Secretary, Youth Resources and Sports, Bendang Longchari as guest of honour who would also gave away the prizes.
