: Although crop cultivation in most part of district was adversely effected due to lack of rainfall, farmers of ‘Tesen vegetable village’ under Peren district took pride as they harvested the season’s organic potato on Saturday. Though not in abundance unlike previous year, farmers have produced enough to sell off in the market and to set aside seeds for cultivation next season.
Tesen village which include New Tesen, Old Tesen, Mbaulwa and Heiranglwa village was identified as ‘Tesen vegetable village’ under Horticulture Technology Mission 2008-09 project where almost all households and more than 500 farmers of four villages are actively engaged in vegetable farming. This year, a total of 10 M/T summer potato seeds were distributed by Horticulture department where total production yielded were above 70M/T. However, due to adverse climatic condition farmers could not harvest much as was expected. Farmers were expecting more than 150M/T of potato production.
Besides potatoes, Tesen farmers are engaged in cultivating beans, tomato, peas, bringjal, cabbage, maize, cucumber, white pumpkin, turnip, colocasia etc. When asked on income generated through vegetable farming, the farmers said income received was quite satisfactory.
Those willing to taste the potatoes can buy them as Tesen vegetable village for the first time would be selling its organic potato in Dimapur on July 1 at supermarket.
