The first ever Inter-School under-16 T20 cricket tournament in Wokha district organized by the Wokha District Cricket Association (WDCA) got underway here at the local ground Monday. Speaking as chief guest at the opening ceremony program, Wozhuro-Ralan CDPO, C. Sorenthung Kikon dwelled at length on the essence of the game of cricket which he said was, of all games in the world, played at the highest level of decency and with an essence of gentleness. Kikon exhorted the budding cricketers to play cricket not only as a game of bat and ball but with an essence of gentleness. To buttress his point, Kikon cited the exemplary gentlemanly conduct of West Indian fast bowler Courtney Walsh during their series against Pakistan in the 80’s for which he was rewarded with an invitation by the Pakistanis and awarded with their highest civilian award. The CDPO further urged the young players to let the game of cricket inspire them to become ‘that someone’ in life (someone having gentlemanly conduct in life). The chief guest also declared the tournament open by taking the field and batting the first ball bowled to him. Nine under 16 teams from nine schools including AG School, Libemo Memorial School, DBHSS, Mt. Sinai School, Little Angels’ School, CMHS, Gilgal School, Bloomfield Academy and Springdale School are participating in the tournament. WDCA president Khamongo Humtsoe in his welcome address said the tournament was being held under the directives of Nagaland cricket Association (NCA) with the aim to promote and popularize the game of cricket in the district, and to select the district’s team for the forthcoming NCA’s under-16 tournament for the state. In the first match of the tournament, DBHSS (174 for 7 wickets) trounced Libemo Memorial School (67 all out in 14 overs). Yanpothung of DBHSS top scored with his swashbuckling 43 before spooning out to a reckless pull. Yanponthung of DBHSS was adjudged the man of the match for his match-winning haul of 6 wickets. Senior WDCA umpires Summoth Alley and O. Mhao Ezung administered the first match.
