Protest rally against violence in NC Hills

A large crowd turned up for the protest rally organized by Zeliangrong Baudi and Dimasa Public Organization at Clock Tower on Monday morning, against prevailing violence in the North Cachar hills. Representatives from various NGOs also attended the rally besides people from several communities including Kacharis and Garo’s. Delivering the welcome address, president, Zeliangrong Baudi, K. Akhang highlighted the various problems faced by both the communities and called for end to the violence in the hills. President, Dimasa Public Organisation (DPO) Nagaland stated that since time immemorial both the communities have lived in peace and expressed surprised over the killings even after no less then twenty meetings were held between both the communities. He also urged to let the Zeme and Dimasa people live in peace. Later talking with this reporter, he stated that involvement of third party cannot be ruled since more then 65000 paramilitary were deployed for a population of nearly three lakhs and still could not contain the violence. Meanwhile urging the Assam government to contain the violence in the hills, Advisor, Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) also requested the government to provide ex-gratia and relief to the affected families. President, Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mutsikhoyo Yhobo alleged that militants groups were operating side by side with security forces and stated that human rights were totally violated. He also alleged that Assam was not serious about solving the problem and questioned the motive of the Assam government for being silent on the issue. Representative from Naga Mothers’ Association also called upon the gathering to sacrifice and solve the problem at the earliest. Speaking at the programme representative from the Naga Women Hoho Dimapur stated that it was high time people spoke the truth and urged all the people to come together. Coordinator Naga Hoho Assam who also spoke at the rally expressed hope that the rally will pave way for peace. “How can we bring about development and go forward with this violence?” questioned a representative of Eastern Naga People Union, Dimapur. Kachari Tribal Council president in his speech pointed out that the change of nomenclature form NC hills to Dima Hosai Raji which was opposed by the Zemes’ was allegedly taken advantage off by some third party. He also stated that nothing can be ruled out whether it was the government, ceasefire groups or breakaway groups. Meanwhile speaking on the occasion, Naga Council president pointed out that the people should know why the violence was happening and stated that human lives were lost due to casual attitude of few leaders with vested interest. He also urged both communities on behalf of the Naga Council to sort out the differences through peaceful dialogue and spirit of accommodation. “…howsoever strong and legitimate reasons are projected for a cause, violence and murder of innocent civilian is wrong” he stated. It may be mentioned that the ethnic violence in the hills have claimed more than sixty lives, several properties damaged and thousands have been displaced.
