India qualifies for Asian junior Championship

: India made a clean sweep of all the titles at stake in the SAFF table tennis championship and have qualified in all four sections for the Asian junior championship that gets underway here from tomorrow. Indian junior boys and girls defeated Sri Lanka in their last round robin league 3-0 to take the pole position yesterday. With one set of league matches to go, Pakistan will have to wait for India’s expected win over Sri Lanka in junior boys and will hope to beat Nepal with ease and qualify. In the other three sections, where India plays Sri Lanka today. In the cadet boys section, played on league-cum-knockout basis, India blanked Pakistan 3-0 while Sri Lanka, which beat Pakistan by a similar margin in the league, stopped Nepal by an identical score in the semifinals. Meanwhile, China will start favourite when the 13-nation Asian junior championship begins here. According to the ranking list released, the boy’s list is headed by World number three China’s Yin Hang and the section has attracted six out of the top 11 players of the world. The girls’ section will see four of the world’s top-eight players. Japan’s Asuki Machi, ranked ninth in the world, is the favourite to win the cadet boys section, where China has not yet specified the names of its players so far.
