A disgruntled opposition member in the House of the Manipur Legislative Assembly on Wednesday criticized a report of killing domestic cattle and fowls during a counter insurgency operation at Pumlenpat (part of the Loktak lake) on June 20, 2009. As many as 11 huts were set ablaze and domestic animals killed in the June 20 counter insurgency operation to flush out militants in Chingjao village having a population of less than 200 families. The operation was launched by combined forces of Manipur police commandos and troops of Assam Rifles. Opposition MLA, O Joy drew the attention of the state home minister in the House on Wednesday on excess of security personnel during the operation stating that the security personnel apart from burning down the huts uses by the villagers during fishing caused severe damage to their properties. Joy also wanted to know the step taken up by the government to compensate the loss of properties of villagers displaced during the operation. Chief minister, O Ibobi Singh replying to the call of attention motion, said that government had so far received no reports of causing damages to the villagers. He said the villagers did not lodge complaint with the police or other authorities in regard to excess of militants but assured the house that he will look into the matter and do the needful to compensate the losses of the villagers. However, he added that during the operation many incriminating documents related with the proscribed outfits, KYKL and PLA were seized from the huts and were burnt down by security forces as it sheltered the militants.
