Four extortionists arrested

Four extortionists including a third year arts stream student of Dimapur Government College (DGC) were arrested by the Dimapur Police Special Branch (SB) on charges of extortion on Wednesday. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (SB), H K Sema, one Vito (22) son of Houlto (Md Ali) and a student of DGC, called up the victim and told him in that he was sending two of his boys to collect the money from his residence. On refusing to budge to his demands, the accused sent two of accomplices, namely Alex Sep (19) son of Toikhu and Itoka Yepthomi (21) son of Simon Yepthomi to the victims house. Later both the accused forcibly took Rs 17,000 along with a Samsung mobile phone worth Rs 15, 000 at gunpoint and told the victim that they would come back again to collect the remaining amount later. On receiving the information, police personnel of SB laid a trap and on July 28 the culprits turned up around 12.45 pm to collect the money but however managed to escape on sensing something wrong. Later the next day around 3.10 pm in the evening, one of the accused Itoka turned up and was promptly arrested from Kalibari which later led to arrest of his other accomplices including one Gwayuto Kent (17). However the police could not recover the pistol from the culprits which reportedly contained three live rounds. The victim’s wife also reported that a round was fired from the pistol on the day when they forcibly took away the money.
On further interrogation the culprits confessed that they were planning to kidnap the victim, a manager of a company and also admitted of carrying out several cases of extortion and theft in and around Lomthi colony and Marwaripatty. They also admitted to selling off the jewelry from one their heist to a jeweler at Dhobinala for Rs 8,000. It may be mentioned that the jewelry belonged to a lecturer of Public College of Commerce (PCC). According to the culprits two students of PCC called them up and requested them to teach the lecturer a lesson since he was bit strict with the students.
Till the time of filing this report, both the students were still not in police custody.
