Australian captain Ricky Ponting overtook Allan Border as Australia’s leading run scorer in Tests during the second day’s play of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston on Friday. Ponting overtook Border`s mark of 11,174 runs in his 134th match, had started the innings needing 25 to step into third place on the all-time list and resumed on the second morning on 17. Only India’s batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, with 12,773 runs from 159 matches, and West Indian wizard Brian Lara, with 11,953 runs from 131 Tests are now ahead of Ponting in the scoring charts. Border had taken 156 Tests to reach his mark. He achieved the milestone in the just the fourth over of the day, needing taking only five balls to reach the target, with a flick for 3 runs through mid-wicket off Andrew Flintoff. He duly stopped to raise his bat. He was eventually dismissed for 38 runs.
