IT, the answer to stay ahead:Dutta

Incorporation of technology and innovative ideas is the answer to stay ahead in the competitive media business, Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Shillong Director Ashoke K Dutta said on Friday. “Media organizations must incorporate new age media tools to stay ahead of competitors in the media business,” Dutta said during the workshop on “increasing profitability of media organisations”. Stressing on the need to have collaborations between media houses if that meant increasing profitability, the IIM-Shillong Chief said, media houses must look into avenues to increasing profitability by way of collaborating. On cost reduction strategies, Dutta tipped off cost reduction strategies by sliding newsprint rolls from trucks on planks instead off-loading the rolls on tyres saving the (media) organisation about 7 per cent from damage and subsequent wastage of newsprint. “There are several other simple ideas that need to be looked into to cut cost reduction in this age of competition,” he stated. Highlighting on new media implications, Information Technology expert Basav Roychoudhury said IT tools can complement the conventional media houses. He said the media houses must take advantage of these new media tools rather than view these as competitors. “The new age media is the future and media houses need to incorporate these into their organizational set-up to tap young readers,” Roychoudhury said.
