460 kg ganja seized; 2 held

Excise and narcotic cell team seized 460 kg ganja worth Rs. 4 lakh (in grey local market) in a compressed form from specially built secret chambers of a truck and arrested two persons in Dimapur in the wee hours on Wednesday. Deputy Commissioner of excise and narcotic cell, said that the team led by inspector Vikishe Awomi on specific information intercepted a Bihar bound truck (NL-06-A2757) at Ghorapati area, Dimapur and seized the contraband. The contraband, reported to be worth Rs.13, 80, 000 (rupees thirteen lakh eighty thousand) in grey national market and Rs.2, 28, 00000 (rupees two crore twenty-eight lakh) in grey international market, was concealed in a secret compartment of the truck, in a bid to hoodwink the law enforcing agencies. The contraband compressed and wrapped in black polythene sheets were concealed in specially built secret camber in the rear side of the truck’s cabin. Truck driver identified as one Raspal Singh (50), resident of Amristar, Punjab, presently residing at Beltola, Guwahati, Assam and accomplice identified as one Chotu Kumar (20), son of Shiv Shankar resident of Khatihar, Bihar presently residing at Mao colony, (Nagarjan colony) Dimapur were arrested and truck seized. On interrogation, they confessed that the main accused identified as one Kunal, resident of Patna (who is absconding) had left for Patna by Brahmaputra mail that morning at around 5:30 a.m. They also disclosed that contraband ganja originated from Mao gate, and was later stashed at Mao colony, Dimapur from where repacking and loading into truck was carried out. The accused also revealed that they regularly indulge in such illegal business, as they were paid handsome amount by main accused (Kanul) for smuggling the contraband. The two accused, booked under NDPS Act 985, have been forwarded to judicial custody for trail. Meanwhile, in another operation Dimapur police special operation team Wednesday at around 1:30 pm seized 300 kg ganja from a Tata 207 (NL-01-A 0370) at 6th mile area and arrested two persons in connection with it. According to police, the contraband ganja was concealed along with firewood. The two accused identified as one Bishnu Chettri (28) and Atozo Rate (22) along with vehicle have been remanded to police custody.
